Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pierce, third assistant Secretary of State, transmits the photograph contained in GLC00861.01. Responds to a 2 September 1905 letter from Jeffery (possibly publisher and printer William Hartley Jeffrey) requesting that Pierce acquire the signatures of the photograph's subjects, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Written on Department of State stationery.
