Autograph manuscript signed. Smith served in Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd NY Cavalry, "Van Allen's Regiment." Diary kept in ink and pencil with later pencil pagination. Includes ink drawings of Camp layouts at Poolesveille, Md. and Harpers Ferry, Va. Concerns Maryland, Harper's Ferry, and the Shenandoah campaign. Mentions Jackson's Valley Campaign repeatedly (p. 196). With later note on the Assyrian Empire at end. Dated March 11-October 27, 1862.
