Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

On a Brownstone silver print photograph with cloth mount. The mount is inscribed by Porter to Mrs. Eddy. Ink notes on front identify the group as Lincoln, McClellan, Capt. Custer, Gen. Porter, Gen. Humphreys et al. Post Civil War print based on a Gardner negative. Probably 1880s or later, per Mary Schobert, CCAHA.
