Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Portsmouth Sept. 15 1780. Whereas Thomas Martin & George Wentworth as Agents hath bought and fitted for Sea a Certain Ship called the Diane and bound on a Cruize, Against the Enemies of the United States of America under the Command of Capt. Thomas Manning and lays ready to Sail the first wind -We the underwritten owners in equal Shares of one tenth each, engage our selves Severally, our heirs Executors, Administrators & Assigns, to pay unto the said Martin & Wentworth our full proportion of their just Account for purchase & outfitts immediately on their accounts being exhibited in the above proportions
And we furthermore engage to pay, indemnify the Sd Agents any C[text loss]es, or damages that may herafter appear & accur[text loss] on the above Cru[text loss] the same pro-portion, in wi[text loss] for which we have hereunto sett our hands the day [text loss] your above written.
