Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This carte-de-visite appears to be based on an early photograph of Lee (refer to GLC05111.01.0580). Circa date previously assessed, based on the fact that carte de visites became popular in America in the 1860s. Depicts Lee as a young man with a moustache.
