At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Confederate currency from the seventh issue. Contains 60 ten dollar bills, featuring an image of field artillery in the center with Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter, Confederate Senator (1862-1865), in the lower right corner. Includes one 20 dollar bill, depicting the Tennessee State Capital at Nashville in the center and Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate States (1861-1865), in the lower right corner. Contains one 100 dollar bill, depicting Lucy Pickens, wife of South Carolina Governor Francis Pickens in the center, two soldiers in the lower left corner, and George Randolph, Confederate Secretary of War (1862), in the lower right corner.
