One orders dated January 23, 1838 from the Hanover County Court to the sherriff. The order lists the names of freedmen who were not able to pay their taxes: [Cussis] Austin, Milton Rook, John Redd, Peter Page, Frank Harris, Moses Harrison, Jordan Mills, Isaac Brown, Ben Harris, Jack Crenshaw, Charles Clarke, John Green, Lewis Scott, Jeremiah Thompson, William Moss, Edmund, George White, Archibald White, Joe Wilson, Bob Williams Evans, Ben Evans, and Scott. It details that that they must all work until they make ninety cents each. Stipulates that they cannot be carried out of the county and must be hired for no less than eight cents a day.
