Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Details the Lovett family accounts. Most are lists of sundry goods brought to Lovett by ship and their costs. Mentions the names of many ships, their sailing dates, and their captains. Note on last page signed by Jeremiah and Ezra Lovett, 2 July 1783. Lovett was a privateer ship merchant and captain in Beverly, Massachusetts.
