At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Remarks that he hopes Andrew had a pleasant trip to New York with General George Washington. Also hopes that the war between Great Britain and [the colonies] comes to an end. Would like to see him in the fall and sends complements to his family. Addressed to Mr. Andrew Caldwell, Philadelphia merchant and Commander in Chief of the armed boats of Philadelphia. Docket states letter is from Captain Noble Caldwell. Possibly written in Cape Henlopen, Delaware; Caldwell indicates his location as "Capenlopen."
