At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his brother in Aberdeen, Scotland that he has arrived in London from New York after a 30 day trip. He expected to have arrived sooner but wanted to wait for a safer ship. States that he will write again when he gets settled. Gives love to family and friends. Postscript explains that he will find out soon about getting an exchange and comments that he will not do anything hasty or without advise. Charles Irvine was a soldier in the British army during the Revolutionary War. As the war has ended, he is trying to get an exchange to another post so as to not have to be reduced to half pay.

Charles Irvine served in the British Army for fifteen years before going on half pay. But he soon returned, and eventually rose to the rank of major general.
Alexander Irvine was the Eighteenth Laird of Drum. He was involved in a number of financial squabbles during his early life.
