Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife in Newbury, Massachusetts that he misses her and wants to see her. Tells a story about a lieutenant in the regiment who courted a young lady using the name of their captain so that his wife would not hear about his affair, but the captain found out about the lieutenant's lies and he was tried and sent home. He expects to leave for Boston within 10 days. Noyes was a soldier in the Continental army during the Revolutionary War.
