Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists goods he has received as the commander of the privateer ship the Marquiss to ship on behalf of Samuel Croce. States he will sell the contents in France and return to Croce the profits after giving one fourth to the freight commissioners. The estimated costs of the goods are listed on the lower half of the document. Document is signed by an N. Ward but John Buffington was the commander of the Marquis (see GLC01450.060).
