Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States that Mead advanced Lieutenant James Hughes two hundred dollars Continental currency to raise a company for the defense of Greenwich. The next year Hughes defected to the enemy, leaving Mead with only a promissory receipt. The assembly resolves to pay Mead seven pounds ten schillings out of the treasury to cover this expense. Mead signs acknowledging receipt of the money. Written at "A General Assembly of the State of Connecticut."

Amos Mead was a doctor from Greenwich, Connecticut. He served in in the American Revolution and in the Connecticut state legislature.
George Wyllys was secretary of the colony of Connecticut for sixty years, during which he attended every session of the legislature. Also was town-clerk of Hartford from 1730 until his death, became a captain of militia in 1738, and held a commission of lieutenant-colonel in the French and Indian War.
