Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Troup as aide-de-camp of Major General Horatio Gates. This pass gives permission to Captain John Norris of Colonel Samuel Johnson's regiment of militia from the state of Massachusetts Bay to return home with his company after completing their stipulated tour of duty. Marked "To All Concerned."
