At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Major General Ward as commander of the Eastern Department (he was succeeded by Major General William Heath in March 1777) to Ebenezer Hancock as Deputy Paymaster General of U.S. forces. Order to pay Thomas Urann, Director of the Carpenter, forty six pounds and ten shilling, equal to 155 dollars, which was October's pay for him and the carpenters under him. On verso is breakdown of the pay for the carpenters. Urann made 6 pounds as foreman and the 9 "artificers" under him made 4 pounds 10 shillings each. Countersigned to by Thomas Urann that he received the money.
