Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially Printed document signed by Cooke as Governor of Rhode Island. Co-signed by Secretary Henry Ward. John Fiske was named a Major in the Second Regiment of militia from the county of Providence. Embossed paper seal with the symbol of Rhode Island the word "Hope" on it. Document is pasted to a piece of heavier paper and the docket is barely visible when viewed through the heavy paper.
