At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Signed by Josiah Wilkins and Jabez Bush, both members of a regiment from Marlborough, Massachusetts. They request that Edgel "please to diliver to Lieut Peter [Howe] our Wages and This shall Be your Discharge from us." Lists the names of18 soldiers.

Howe served as a Lieutenant in Captain Amasa Cranson's Marlborough Company in 1776.
