At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Ledger of payments from the town of Newburyport to Samuel Tufts. The payments began on 10 February 1778 and ended on 24 September 1778 and was for a total of over 182 pounds. The town mostly purchased clothing from Tufts. He signed the document, apparently stating he received the funds.
