Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly sent from Saint John, New Brunswick by telegraph. Written on Western Union Telegraph Company stationery. The message states "Twenty five years old today. all right." Accompanied by three collateral newspaper clippings containing biographical information regarding Israel Manchester Hopkins and Captain J. M. Hopkins.

Thomas T. Eckert, the General Superintendent of the Western Union Telegraph Company, headed the Telegraph Office of the War Department during the Civil War. William Orton was President of the Telegraph Company 1867-1878.
