Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appoints Simon Elliot as Major General in the Massachusetts Militia. Elliot had been appointed to the same rank in 1796, which the document mentions. Signed by Caleb Strong as Governor of Massachusetts. Also signed by John Avery as "Secretary." Massachusetts State seal affixed.

Caleb Strong was the Governor of Massachusetts.
John Avery was the Secretary of State of Massachusetts.
Simon Elliot was a Major General in the Massachusetts Militia.
