Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders a party be formed to "lay the floor of the tents." The "Jr Mr Sejeant" should accompany the order to New York and obtain the needed tools. Letter dates Monday 26, 1776. The only times Monday fell on the 26th in 1776 were February and August. It is far more likely these would have occured on 26 August, when major fighting was taking place in and around New York.

Francis Johnston was a colonel in the Fifth Pennsylvania.
Persifor Frazer was a lieutenant colonel in the Fifth Pennsylvania. A prisoner of the British from11 September 1777 until his escape 17 March, 1778. Later rose to the rank of Brigadier General of the Pennsylvania Militia.
