At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain William Coombs and others on a Newburyport committee pay Moody for work completed in May and June 1776 related to the construction of a fort on Plum Island. Moody receives payment for such items as work with oxen (used to haul timber), bushels of corn, and hay for oxen. Moody attests that the sums listed have been paid in full. Docket states "Jn Moodys Bill part."
