Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists expenses and materials needed for construction and maintenance of a fort on Plum Island, Massachusetts. Docket states that the fort was called "Fort Arnold." Lists expenses from June through October. Notes spikes, iron, material for chimney construction, hooks, a tiller, hinges, and staples, among various other items. Possibly created in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
