Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Fernald signs as a witness. Samuel [Hamon?] instructs Captain Morgan Lewis to pay Simon Chase a sum of money (possibly out of Hamon's wages).

Lewis's company of militia marched in response to the 19 April 1775 Lexington Alarm. Lewis also served as a select man for Sanford (present day Maine).
