Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lewis, a selectman of Sanford, instructs "All Persons having any Demands on the Town of Sanford" to assemble at Jonathan Johnson's dwelling house on 14 March in order to present their case before a committee of selectmen.

Lewis's company of militia marched in response to the 19 April 1775 Lexington Alarm.
