Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

To Connecticut Treasurer John Lawrence. Cosigned by Thomas Seymour. Requests payment from the Colony of Connecticut to Amos Alden (on behalf of the select men) for guns and bayonets to be used by Captain Isaac Bostwick's Company. Alden signs on verso, confirming receipt of the sum. Docket indicates that this receipt was audited 13 May 1776.

Ellsworth served as a Continental Congressman 1778-1783, and as a United States Senator 1789-1796.
