Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Trumbull, Governor of Connecticut, states "Mr. Isaac Gleason of Farmington, came from thence hither an Express to bring me a Packet from Genl Putnam please to settle with him for this service according to usual Custom- and draw on the Treasurer for payment- & charge the United States for the Same- as the business is Continental." Trumbull was possibly referring to General Israel Putnam. For Gleason's receipt, refer to GLC01450.609.11.
