Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cook signs at Hartford, Connecticut on 23 March 1779, confirming receipt of a sum paid by the State of Connecticut. Fenn Wadsworth signs on behalf of the Connecticut Pay Table Committee, acknowledging payment to Cook, and Cook's receipt of the sum. Wadsworth signs on verso on 1 March 1779, attesting that he employed Cook for transmission of an express to Governor Jonathan Trumbull 27 February 1779. Docketed 23 March 1779.
