Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sends copies of letters he wrote Taylor on 9 April 1779 and 17 May 1779, to which Taylor has not responded. Wharton urgently requested ammunition for frigates. Taylor worked with Hugh Hughes' ironworks in New Jersey.

James Wharton (1732-1782) was a Philadelphia merchant and ship chandler.
George Taylor (1716-1781) was a Continental congressman and signer of Declaration of Independence who resigned in 1777 to return to the iron business.
