Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Odell informs Lorimer that Sir Guy Carleton has again mentioned him to Sir George Yonge, British Secretary at War. Relates that Yonge "had spoken to the King on the Subject, and that His Majesty is pleased to approve of your having the half-pay of Inspector & c- on which occasion it is with great sincerity that I offer you the congratulation..." Refer to GLC01450.807.04.04, in which Lorimer requested retirement from Yonge after serving as a surgeon for the Royal Army since the French and Indian War. Date inferred from GLC01450.807.04.04.

Sir George Yonge served as British Secretary at War 1782-1794.
