At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Typed and signed as a true copy by Albert L. Mills as First Lieutenant and Adjutant First Cavalry. The Officers of the 4th United States Colored Heavy Artillery have invited Brisbin to serve as Colonel of that regiment. Assistant Adjutant General Howe reports that he has forwarded the invitation to the Adjutant General of the Army along with the Commanding General's recommendation. Written from Headquarters, Department of Arkansas. Identical to GLC01504.02.06. These typewritten copies date to circa 1887-1891 based on Mill's rank and assignment at the time.
