Instructions related to the purchase of military supplies written during the Whiskey Rebellion. Written from the War Department. Hodgdon was the Superintendent of Military Stores of the United States Army.

Sir,
All supplies in the Ordnance department must be purchased under the orders of the Secretary of the Treasury and of course the Armourers [sic], Tools &c. the estimates of which I shall transmit to him -
I request you to instruct Mr. Nicholson to engage the Armourers [sic] upon the terms mentioned in your letter of yesterday He will be the Superintendent but it will be necessary first to obtain the Presidents approbation But he has better go off under the new appointment which shall retrospect to this day -
