Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders Hodgdon, the Superintendent of Military Stores of the United States Army, to pack military clothing for transport to western Pennsylvania. Indicates that the supplies are for Colonel Francis Mentges, who was involved in the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion. Written from the War Department.

…I request that you will immediately have packed up one hundred Suits of infantry clothing and one hundred suits of Artillery Clothing, excepting Linen Overalls in order to be transported to Carlisle or some other place of recruiting rendezvous on the road to Pittsburg. It will be well to have the Clothing put up in four separate packages... .
