Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders Hodgdon, the Superintendent of Military Stores of the United States Army, to send clothing for the militia to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The military was then engaged in the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion. Written from the War Department.

…I request that you would have transported to Pittsburg, with all possible dispatch, the articles of clothing contained in the schedule enclosed, the same being intended for the clothing of the Corps of Militia which will be stationed there during the ensuing winter. This clothing must be sent to the order of Major Craig, subject to the orders of the commanding general...
