Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Catherine Macaulay Graham from Catherine S. Gregoire dated January 3, 1791. She thanks her for the book, which her husband is now reading for the second time. She feels she has lost the spirit of patriotism due to past events, and she fears she will never become a reformer.
