Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed banknote signed by Randolph and cosigned by John Blair and Robert Carter Nicholas as treasurer. Contains Robert Carter Nicholas's promise to pay 1,775 (unspecified currency) or the "Bearer on (demand) Twelve Pounds."

Peyton Randolph (1721-1775) was the Speaker of the Virginia House of Burgess and president of the 1st and 2nd Continental Congresses.
