Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his brother-in-law that he arrived in New York City by sunrise via a boat from New Haven, Connecticut. States that he will continue on the next day (possibly to Washington, D.C. for a session in Senate). Year written in pencil at a later date.

Serving as Senator (1827-1840) and (1845-1850), Webster frequently rested in New York City on his way to Washington, D.C.
