Written in pencil from Fairfax Court House, Virginia. Comments on the possibility of battle if the Yankees don't run. Expresses desire to capture Yanks and kill them. Describes a hard march to Fairfax.

...and then we expect to go to Alexandra whir we expect to have a battle if the yankes do not run from us as they have dun in every battle that has bin faught thare has bin several little skirmishes within a few miles of this place they have met with considerable loss of men & but few kild on our side not more than one [2] or two in a battle I think we will have a chance to take a few of the rebels in a few days thare is some whirs between twenty five & fifty thousand of our men scattered round in this neighbour hood & cuming in every day the number of soldiers that is in Virgina is not none the women & children is all sceard all moste to deth the wome I dont blame to be fritened for the treatment they received from the broots is out ragious & unknown I think when we git holte of them we will pay them for there transgressions on our soil every yankey we find we take him and put him in prison or hang him or plase him by the side of a tree & fire fiften or twenty mskets at him...
