Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A ledger sheet recording 1829 annuities paid to the Delaware, Peoria, Wea, Piankishaw, Haskaskia, and Kickapoo Indians between March 1, 1829 and June 1, 1829. Lists the amount, location of transaction, voucher number, from whom the funds came and to whom they were paid. Richard Graham's signature is found in the body of the ledger.
