Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Witnessed by J.B. Wells, A. Shane, and Neil Dagenet, and signed with "X" by four Witnessed by Piankishaw chiefs and headmen: Non-do-qua-shin-go, Paseca-sha, La-pin-gha, Man-zan-gha, La-Man-ya. Payment made for the annuity due for 1829 in accord with acts of Congress from 6 May 1796 and 3 March 1807. Signed docket on verso by Graham, who labeled the receipt No. 4.
