Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Witnessed by Raphael Wielen and Anthony C. Lediuk, and signed with "X" by Haskaskia chiefs and headmen: Kimansa, Baptiste Paschal, Pemicciwai, and Petagogue. Payment made for the annuity due for 1829 in accord with acts of Congress from 6 May 1796 and 7 May 1822. Signed docket on verso by Graham, who labeled the receipt No. 5.
