Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Witnessed by William Myers, Jr., James Comier, Joseph Philbert, Jr., and William Gittiss, and signed with "X' by eight Delaware chiefs and headman: William Anderson, Patters an, Pushes, Shawnach, Simon Girty, Capt. Peipe, Jan a quick, and Capt. Beaver. Payment made for the annuity due for 1829 in accord with acts of Congress from 6 May 1797, 1 May 1810, and 3 March 1819. Signed docket on verso by Graham, who labeled the receipt No. 1.
