Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written at Camp Pierpont to his wife. Writes, "Dear Wife it makes me so angry when i think of the way we have been humbuged and treated since we have been in the service that some times i think if the Rebels were coming into Gettys... i would barely help to keep them out..." (ellipses were included by the author).
