Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written at Camp Pierpont to his wife. Notes, "...yesterday was the grand Review and such a sight was never seen on this continent it is impossible for me to tell you how may [sic] soldiers was there but i suppose from 50 to 70 thousand they were Reviewed By Genl McClellan he is a noble looking man..." Comments on how he misses his wife and young son.
