Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that the Third Brigade has been moved to Washington, D.C., and the Second Brigade to Alexandria, Virginia. Notes that his brigade will remain where it is, Fairfax Station, a "quiet healthy Place." Doubts that he will receive a promotion. Notes that he left home (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) 22 months ago. Accompanied by a newspaper clipping containing an anecdote related to the bravery of the Pennsylvania Reserves. Clipping measures 7.3 x 6.2 cm.
