Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from camp near Kellys Ford. Sympathizes regarding "the difficulties" between Lile and "the girls." Reports on camp news, expressing enjoyment that he received fresh bread, beans, potatoes, and rice as part of his rations the previous day. Continues writing on page four, 18 November, in pencil. Transmits money to Lile, his wife (not included).
