Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. He discusses briefly the execution of a soldier for shooting another soldier. He ends his letter with offering to give Mr. Andrews ten dollars in gold to name Andrew's new child. Written in pencil.

Barlett served with Company B, 1st Light Artillery Regiment Rhode Island. He was a tailor before the war and a widower.
