At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First two pages consist of a handwritten list of Eben Whittemore's expenses in service to the United States. Pages three and four are a printed copy of United States "General Orders No. 201" from Washington D.C.. The two documents are glued together. The creator of the first list is unknown. Townsend is responsible for the general order.

E. D. (Edward Davis) Townsend was the Adjutant General of the Union Army.
