Asks to be excused for not writing sooner, but he was waiting for the machine to run according to the notion of things. Thinks that Lieutenant Gannett is a gentleman; all his books and papers are in very good shape, but Sayne had to clean the office until it was respectable. Can find any quantity of business here, far more than he thought was possible for a Sub-District office to have. Likes this place far more than Macon, Missouri. There are no regular hotels here, but he has a very fine place to board with a good room. Finished his returns last night and sent them off. Now that he has got things in order, he would be pleased to have Harding and Mr. Dean down here at any time and will do his best to make their visit pleasant. Writes that "the town is very dry but will try and scare up something interesting." Entirely forgot that he has $11.30 of Harding's contingent fund; asks Harding what he should do with this money. Apologizes for the brevity of this letter. Hopes to hear from Harding shortly.
