Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of 51 letters, including 24 wardate soldiers' letters, to recipients in Lancaster and York County, Pennsylvania. Written by various individuals, mostly to Isaac Cover (Kover, Coover) and family in Pennsylvania. Most have envelopes. Notable are letters to Isaac Cover from hospitalized Henry Gorman (1864-65) and Henry B. Blecher (Pennsylvania Cavalry) (1864-65). Includes some love letters to Elizabeth Cover (Kover) from Jacob Cupp and other miscellaneous letters, mostly from the 1860s. Word processed inventory available with list of dates and recipients but no description.
